Chapter 12, Problem 70A
To determine

The efficiency of the given engine and the waste heat produced by it per second.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 70A

  0.34 , and 3500J , respectively

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The output released by the engine, Wt=1800J/s

The input heat given to the engine, QHt=5300J/s

Formula used:

The efficiency of an engine is given by,

  ε=WQH

Where W is the useful work done by the engine, QH is the input heat given.

Calculation:

Above formula of efficiency is given by,

  ε=(Wt)(QHt)

Using the given values in above,

  ε=18005300=0.34

Now for 1sec , W=1800J/s and QH=5300J/s .

Then the heat released at waste is,

  QL=QHW=53001800=3500J

Conclusion:

The efficiency of the given engine and the waste heat produced by it per second 0.34 , and 3500J , respectively.
