The equation of the ellipse with center at the origin, vertices (±a,0) and foci F(±c,0) is x2a2+y2b2=1 , where c=a2b2 , a>b>0 .

Calculations:

Consider the equation of ellipse with the center at (0,0) .

x252+y242=1

Consider the equation of the shifted ellipse with the center at (3,1) .

(x3)252+(y1)242=1 .

That is, equation (2) may obtain from equation (1) replacing x by x3 and y by y1 .

Compare the equation (1) with the general equation of ellipse, x2a2+y2b2=1 .

Then, a2=52 implies a=±5 and b2=42 implies b=±4 .
