Calculation:

By the definition of the ellipse stated above conclude that, vertices of the ellipse x2b2+y2a2=1 are (0,±a) , (±b,0) and the foci are F(0,±c) . Also, c=a2b2 .

Compare the equation x242+y252=1 with the ellipse x2b2+y2a2=1 ,

a2=52

a=5 (Take square root on both sides)

And,

b2=42

b=4 (Take square root on both sides)

Clearly, a=5 , b=4 and a>b>0 . Hence, by the above definition the vertices are (0,±5) and (±4,0) .

Also,

c=a2b2

c=5242

c=2516

c=9

c=±3 .

Hence, by the above definition of ellipse the foci are (0,3) and (0,+3) .

Therefore, the vertices and the foci of the ellipse  x242+y252=1 are (0,±5) , (±4,0) and (0,3) and (0,+3) , respectively.
