Chapter 11, Problem 8CT
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The effect of consumption of alcohol in postsynaptic membranes in the synapsis involving GABA and compare the effect of chronic alcohol consumption. Also, determine the effect of benzodiazepine treatments on the polarization of membranes (postsynaptic) in the people who experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Introduction:

GABA stands for gamma-aminobutyric acid. It is a type of major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of mammals. It helps in the decline of neuronal excitability through the entire nervous system.

Alcohol affects the central nervous system by enhancing the effect ofGABA at its receptor. GABA binds to GABA receptors and opensligand-gated Cl–channels. However, chronic consumption of alcoholmakes the GABA receptor less sensitive to both alcohol and GABA,which increases alcohol dependence as well as alcohol withdrawalsymptoms, such as anxiety, tremors, and insomnia. Benzodiazepinesenhance the binding of GABA molecules to their receptors and thus aresometimes used to treat people with alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Forsynapses involving GABA, predict the effect of alcohol on the postsynaptic membranes; compare the effect of chronic alcohol consumption onthe postsynaptic membranes in these synapses; and predict the effect ofbenzodiazepine treatment on the degree of polarization of postsynapticmembranes in people who are experiencing alcohol withdrawalsymptoms.
What are the receptor(s) involved in caffeine binding? What kind of interaction is established between them, based on the four types of receptors below: Voltage Gated Ion Channels G-protein coupled receptor Enzyme-linked receptor Intracellular receptor
Sometimes, neurotransmitter functioning decreases by adding another signal substance (e.g. neurosteroids). An example of this is when the effect of GABA on a GABA receptor is decreased by administering a substance name picrotoxin. Picrotoxin has no independent effect. What is the correct term for this effect? O Negative allosteric modulation (NAM). O Cotransmission. O Positive allosteric modulation (PAM). O Volume transmission.
