When a surgeon repairs injuries, sutures (stitched knots) are used to hold together and stabilize the injured area. If these knots elongate and loosen through use, the injury may not heal properly because the tissues would not be optimally positioned. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, tied a series of different types of knots with two types of suture material, Maxon and Ticron.
Suppose that 112 tissue specimens were available and that for each specimen the type of knot and suture material were randomly assigned. The investigators tested the knots to see how much the loops elongated. The elongations (in mm) were measured and the resulting data are summarized here.
For purposes of this exercise, assume it is reasonable to regard the elongation distributions as approximately normal.
- a. Is there a significant difference in
mean elongation between the square knot and the Duncan loop for Maxon thread? - b. Is there a significant difference in mean elongation between the square knot and the Duncan loop for Ticron thread?
- c. For the Duncan loop knot, is there a significant difference in mean elongation between the Maxon and Ticron threads?

Josh believes that even though Fluffy, a two-ply toilet paper costs more, it will last longer because it is more absorbent. To help substantiate his claim, Josh performed a study. He purchased a random sample of 18 rolls of Fluffy. For each roll, he determined how many squares are needed to completely absorb one-quarter cup of water. Here is a dotplot of the data. The mean of the sample is 24.444 squares with a standard deviation of 2.45 squares. Single-ply toilet paper requires 26 squares to absorb one-quarter cup of water. Josh would like to carry out a test to determine if there is convincing evidence that the mean number of squares of Fluffy that are needed to absorb one-quarter cup of water is fewer than 26 squares. What is the appropriate test statistic and P-value of this test? A company that manufactures golf balls produces a new type of ball that is supposed to travel significantly farther than the company's previous golf ball. To determine this, 40 new-style golf balls and 40 original- style golf balls are randomly selected from the company's production line on a specific day. The balls are then placed in bag and shaken. A golf pro then selects a ball and hits it. The distance the ball travels is then measured. The bag is shaken again, and the golf O Yes, because the balls are randomly selected, the distances of the new ball can be compared to the distances of the original ball. O Yes, because the original ball type is included in this experiment, the distances the different balls travel can be accurately compared. O No, because a placebo ball was not used, a comparison cannot be made to determine if the new ball travels significantly farther. pro selects another ball to hit. She…arrow_forward

The side view of the water slide, labeled ABC, is shown below. Points A’, B’, and C’, shown above, are the corresponding points of the scaled down slide. Which of the following points: (90, 20), (77, 20), (50, 20), or (47, 20), would be closest to the coordinates of a new point C’ that will make slide A’B’C’ similar to slide ABC?arrow_forwardIn a study, the effects of the mane of a male lion as a signal of quality to mates and rivals was explored. - Q.2. Because of potential variability in aging due to different castings and segments on the castings, a Latin square design with N=7 was used to investigate the effect of heat treatment on aging.
