Chapter 11, Problem 18PS
Summary Introduction

To determine:  The genotype of sterile male tortoiseshell cats.

Concept introduction:

All humans and other mammals contain sex chromosomes such as XY in males and XX in females. The genes present on the X-chromosome are X-linked genes. The activity of a single X chromosome is normal. The males have this normal dosage, as they have one X chromosome. In females, one X chromosome is inactivated for normal dosage. This is known as X-inactivation.

Sex determination in birds is different from that in humans. The sex chromosomes in birds are called Z and W, because males have two of the same chromosome (ZZ), whereas females have two different chromosomes (ZW). There is a Z-linked allele in some birds that causes the death of the embryo when the normal dominant allele is not present. What would be the sex ratio in the living offspring of a cross between a male heterozygous for the lethal allele and a normal female? A) What are the genotypes of the parents? Male____ Female____ B)  Which gametes would each form? Male____ Female____   C) Draw your Punnett square below and determine the sex ratios of living offspring.
Although most tortoiseshell cats are female, a litter of kittens will occasionally contain a male tortoiseshell. Which of the following can explain tortoiseshell coat color in a male kitten? Please explain in detail. The male kitten has an extra Y chromosome The male kitten has an extra X chromosome The male kitten has no X chromosome The male kitten cannot carry out X-inactivation
The genes for the eye-color of fruit flies are located in their X chromosome, or X – linked. (R red-eyed, r white-eyed) A red-eyed female fruit fly is crossed with a white-eyed male fruit fly. What will be the genotype (s) of their offspring?
