Chapter 10.2, Problem 3EQ
Summary Introduction

To determine: The information provided by the results of the experiment about the size of gap-junction channels.

Introduction: Gap junctions permit the passage of ions, small molecules and electrical charges between the cytosols of adjacent cells. Adjacent cells share metabolites through gap junctions. Gap junctions are smaller enough to allow the passage of RNA, proteins or polysaccharides. Cells communicating through gap junctions maintain their own distinctive sets of macromolecules. Gap junctions allow the passage of molecules with a mass up to about 1,000 Da.

MAKE CONNECTIONS Explain why the set of forces driving ionmovement across the plasma membrane of a cell is described as anelectrochemical (electrical and chemical) gradient (see Concept 7.4).
Or. Foyez Samar The volume enclosed by the plasma membrane of plant cells is often much larger the c corresponding volume in animal cells. The most regsengble explanation for this observation Is that A) plant cells are capable of having a much higher surface-to-volume ratio than animal cells. B) plant cells have a much more highly convoluted (folded) plasma membrane than animal cens. C) plant cells contain a large vacuole that reduces the volume of the cytoplasm. D) animal cells are more spherical, whereas plant cells are elongated. 12 A u
