Chapter 10, Problem 10.10P
An orifice plate is installed to meter air flow in a 0.25 m diameter pipe. A flow rate of up to 1 m3/s is expected. A transducer with maximum range of 300 mm H2O is available to measure the pressure drop. Specify an acceptable diameter for the orifice plate to maximize the signal. Assume the flow remains incompressible (7=1).

A venturi meter with a throat diameter of 100 mm is fitted in a vertical pipeline of 200 mm diameter with oil of specific gravity 0.88 flowing upwards at a rate of 0.06 m-3 s'1. The venturi meter coefficient is 0.96. Two pressure gauges calibrated in kilo newtons per square metre are fitted at tapping points, one at the throat and the other in the inlet pipe 320 mm below the throat. The difference between the two gauge pressure readings is 28 kN/m-3. Working from Bernoulli's equation determine the difference in level in the two limbs of a mercury manometer if it is connected to the tapping points and the connecting pipes are filled with the same oil
Recommend the low cost flow meter used in industries for measuring flow that provides negligible loss of head in the pipeline. Discuss its construction and working. A venturi tube of throat diameter 10 cm is placed in a pipe of diameter 20 cm. The volumetric flow rate through the venturi tube is 0.02 m3/ sec. [Given: viscosity of water = 10–3 Pas]. Determine the Reynolds number and the upstream to throat differential pressure developed.
PROCESS INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL
In a differential pressure flow meter, determine the velocity at the outlet for the given technical specification. The density of the liquid flowing through the pipeline is 997 kg/m³, Pressure at inlet is 10 lb/ft2, pressure at outlet is 8 lb/ft2 and cross sectional area of the orifice is 0.2512 m. Note: Ratio of meter diameter to pipe diameter is 0.5 and discharge coefficient is 0.61. Also, find the flow rate.
