Chapter 10, Problem 10.29P
A sonic nozzle can be used to regulate flow rate provided that the critical pressure ratio is maintained. While independent of downstream conditions, the upstream properties adjust themselves to the given set of choked flow conditions. Fortunately, the mass flow rate can be computed from the measured stagnation properties. For a range of 101.3 ±7 kPa abs and 10°±5°C, estimate the uncertainty in regulating a mass flow rate at the critical pressure ratio due to these variations alone.

For supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnels, a diffuser efficiency, ηD,can be defined as the ratio of the total pressures at the diffuser exit andnozzle reservoir, divided by the total pressure ratio across a normal shockat the test-section Mach number. This is a measure of the efficiency ofthe diffuser relative to normal shock pressure recovery. Consider asupersonic wind tunnel designed for a test-section Mach number of 3.0which exhausts directly to the atmosphere. The diffuser efficiency is 1.2.Calculate the minimum reservoir pressure necessary for running thetunnel.

Gas flowing through a diverging nozzle has at inlet section a temperature of
20 °C, pressure 120 kN/m² and velocity 300 m/s. At the outlet of the nozzle
the velocity has fallen to 100 m/s. Assuming an adiabatic flow, what is the
values of outlet pressure, temperature, internal energy and specific enthalpy at
outlet section. Take y= 1.333 and Cv= 0.86 kJ/kg K.
A solid propellant rocket motor was tested at sea level and following data were obtained:
Propellant burn time = 34 sec
Initial mass before test = 1400 kg
Mass after test = 320 kg
Average thrust = 85,000 N
Chamber pressure = 8.0 MPa
Nozzle exit pressure = 0.08 MPa
Atmospheric pressure = 0.1013 MPa
Nozzle throat diameter = 0.093 m
Nozzle exit diameter = 0.312 m
Calculate: (1) Mass flow rate m; (2) Exit velocity v2; (3) Characteristic velocity c*;
(4) Effective exhaust velocity c; and (5) Specific Impulse I, at sea level.
Draw the sketch of Chamber & Nozzle, and Show all calculations.
