Concept explainers
It is likely that others beside Anton van Leeuwenhoek were using lenses to look at microorganisms. After all, Robert Hooke had developed and used the compound microscope in about 1665, and the first letter from van Leeuwenhoek to the Royal Society of London was written in 1673. Why is it that we know about the observations of van Leeuwenhoek and not others? What reasons can you give for why it is important for scientists to publish the results of their research?

- Robert Hooke, a French scientist, published Micrographia in which he described many of his microscopic observations. true or false?arrow_forwardMatch the following questions about the people who shaped the field of Microbiology to the "BEST" possible answer... A. Used lenses to make drawings of eukaryotes B. His early work laid the foundation for the study of plant diseases C. Discovered that organisms can derive energy from several different inorganic compounds D. Conducted later experiments to refute spontaneous generation E. Carried out early widespread vaccinations F. His bacterial grouping system laid the foundation for taxonomy based on genetics G. Published early accounts of sexual transmitted diseases H. Used lenses to make drawings of prokaryotes I. Conducted early experiments to refute spontaneous generation J. His bacterial grouping system laid the foundation for taxonomy based on morphologyarrow_forwardIf you were Linnaeus today, with your knowledge on Microbiology today, how would you classify the taxonomy of microorganisms? Give examples.arrow_forward
- Why do you think it is much more difficult to classify microbial species than plants or animals?arrow_forwardAttached below is the study about the effects of handwashing and the effectiveness of soap against bacteria. What conclusions can be generated from this result? A C before washing hands 10 second hand wash B D hot water only rinse 30 second hand wash Figure 8: Agar plates with bacteria A) before washing hands B) after rinsing hands in hot water C) After washing hands with soap for 10 seconds and D) after washing hands for 30 seconds. Images show that the number of bacteria on the plate are not greatly reduced after a hot water rinse or 10 second handwash but bacterial levels are reduced after a proper hand wash for 30 seconds.arrow_forwardCreate a timeline of historical figures and their contributions that have informed our modern understanding and practice of microbiology from the 1600s to today. The timeline must include the dates and contributions of the following people: Linnaeus, Antony van Leeuwenhoek, Robert Hooke, Louis Pasteur, Francesco Redi, Robert Koch, Charles, Darwin, Joseph Lister, Carl Woese, and Kary Mullis.arrow_forward
- Review Alexander Fleming’s experiment that led to the discovery of penicillin. What would be an appropriate control for the experiment in which Fleming applied filtered medium from a Penicillium culture to plates of bacteria?arrow_forwardWhy was Van Leeuwenhoek's discovery of the unknown such a milestone achievement for the progress in microbiology? Why do you think there were not too many other discoveries for some time after?arrow_forwardWhat are the reason why scientist cannot provide the exact number of bacteria existing on earth? give three reason.arrow_forward
- You work in a microbiology lab has been assigned to make routine identifications of Citrobacter freundii, Lactobacillus casei,Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Using the dichotomous keys write up a lab protocol that everyone in your lab can use to identify these four organisms from the samples that your lab will receive. Create a Dichotomous Key(s) and an explanation.arrow_forwardSuppose that one of Pasteur's swan neck flasks had broken, such that the neck came off. What would be the likely result? Maggots would have appeared on the meat The broth would have remained sterile Bacteria would not have been isolated in pure culture The animalcules would have escaped The liquid would have become contaminated You have a mixture of bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, and algae. Which of the following would be most definitive in determining which of these cells are archaea? Size in a bright field microscope Structure in a scanning electron microscope Fluorescence in situ hybridization Super resolution microscopy Simple stainingarrow_forwardWhat kinds of organisms did van Leeuwenhoek observe though his microscope?arrow_forward
