Chapter 18
Bilbo regains consciousness and realises that the enemies have been slain. A man comes looking for Bilbo and tells him Thorin, who is dying owing to his wounds, wants to meet him. When Bilbo reaches the camp, Thorin seeks forgiveness for his harsh words and behavior. As he dies, Bilbo weeps and mourns the loss of a friend.
Bilbo learns that the Eagles and Beorn aided the dwarves in their victory. He is also informed that Fili and Kili also died in the battle. Dain assumes the role of King under the Mountain, and he gives Bard a share of the treasure. Bilbo bids farewell to his friends and leaves for home along with Gandalf, Elvenking, and Beorn.
In the chapter, the battle ends and Bilbo meets Thorin, who is fatally wounded. Thorin’s words to Bilbo highlight the importance of friendship as well as the futility of war. In his death, he understands that material gains are not all that matter. Justice is meted out to Bard when he receives a share of the treasure.
