Chapter 14

Bilbo and the dwarves wonder about Smaug’s whereabouts when the narrator takes us back in time and tells us about what happened to Smaug. After his conversation with Bilbo, Smaug moved toward lake-town to seek revenge. The people of Lake-town, however, were aware of his ways and were able to defend themselves. Since the Master of Lake-town was behaving in a cowardly fashion, the people decided to follow Bard, who was able to deal with the situation more effectively.

As the battle ensues, a thrush informs Bard about the chink in Samug’s armor. Bard shoots an arrow straight into chink near the heart, killing the dragon. Birds inform everyone about Smaug’s death. The Elvenking comes to the aid of Lake-town, eleven days after the devastation caused by Smaug.

In this chapter, the dragon is killed by Bard, who shows exceptional leadership and bravery. The thrush plays a significant role in communicating vital information when needed.
