Viruses cause damage and death of their host cells. While some viral infections are rapid and show these effects within a few hours or days, other viral infections may have a long incubation time before noticeable symptoms appear. Sometimes, viruses may remain in the host cell for long periods of time without causing any symptom but they may cause recurrent diseases.
