Introduction:
Until a few years ago, it was believed that viruses were the smallest infectious particles. However, with the discovery of prions and viroids, it became clear that particles smaller than viruses can also be infectious for plants and animals. Prions are small proteinaceous infectious particles that cause diseases in many animals, including humans.
