Chapter 56, Problem 4Q
Summary Introduction

To review:

The evidence that represents that original functionality is regained by the reef on increase of coral cover form 45% to 10%, the proof on, which the conclusion is based and the factors by which the reef’s functional ability is regained.

Given:

The change in reef rugosity and rate of calcification can be represented by two hypothetical conditions. In the Graph 1 the two models are represented, the red line represents a model, in which the reef cover declines from 45% to 10%. The blue line indicates the model, in which the reef cover increases from 10% to 45%. This information is represented in the following graph:

Life: The Science of Biology, Chapter 56, Problem 4Q

Introduction:

The reef covers are important because they provide the habitat to several other organisms. Due to environmental pollution, the reefs tend to develop very slowly and are incapable to contribute to the reef building. The rugosity of the reefs also gets affected by the calcification process of the reef. The rugosity is dependent upon the calcification. The presence of corals, increase the calcification process of reefs, which also increase its rugosity.
