Todescribe: The stages of the menstrual cycle in which the levels of the follicle-stimulating hormone arehigher than those of luteinizing hormone.
Introduction: The menstrual cycle consists of a monthly series of variations that occur in the female body for the preparation of pregnancy. The menstrual cycle includes four steps that are ovulatory, luteal, menstrual, and follicular. Hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone play a vital role in the menstrual cycle.
Explanation of Solution
Menstruation is the monthly bleeding in women. During the end of the menstrual cycle, the level of follicle-stimulating hormone exceeds the level of luteinizing hormone. The menstrual cycle starts with bleeding and considers as day 1, and the cycle ends just before the beginning of the next menstrual cycle.
The menstrual cycle is of around 28 to 36 days. The menstrual cycle is controlled by hormones that are produced by pituitary glands such as luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. These hormones further stimulate the production of progesterone and estrogen. Approximately around 27-28 and 1-2 in 28 days cycle, the level of follicle-stimulating hormone ishigher than the luteinizing hormone.

- Which hormones influence the menstrual and ovarian cycles?arrow_forwardFigure 43.15 Which of the following statements about hormone regulation of the female reproductive cycle is false? LH and FSH are produced in the pituitary, and estradiol and progesterone are produced in the ovaries. Estradiol and progesterone secreted from the corpus luteum cause the endometrium to thicken. Both progesterone and estradiol are produced by the follicles. Secretion of GnRH by the hypothalamus is inhibited by low levels of estradiol but stimulated by high levels of estradiol.arrow_forwardIn menstruation, the functional layer is shed from the endometrium.
