Chapter 50.5, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To determine: Why the muscles becomes likely stiff, when an animal dies.

Concept introduction: The contraction of muscle cells rely on the interactions between the thick and the thin filaments. The thick filaments are called as the myosin molecules, whereas the thin filaments are called as the actin filaments. The contraction of muscles is the result of filaments motion that is powered by a chemical energy. Myosin molecules comprises of a head and a tail. The head portion is responsible for binding to the ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate).

Vhat are the two types of muscle movement categories? Give an example for both. Describe Swammerdam's experiment and Galvani's experiment with frog legs. What did they tell us about muscle contraction? What is the sliding-filament model for muscle contraction? Describe the role of actin and myosin of sarcomeres in the model (be specific). Describe how an action potential triggers muscle contraction. Know the specific molecules involved. . Describe the structural and functional differences between smooth, cardiac and skeletal muscles. WHAT IF? When using your arms to lower yourself intoa chair, you bend your arms without using your biceps.Explain how this is possible. (Hint: Think about gravityas an antagonistic force.)
What makes for faster muscle?  At what cost?  Answer this both for fast-twitch compared to slow-twitch muscle in vertebrates and for muscle specializations for high-speed in vertebrates and invertebrates.
