The flow of material is regulated by the cell membrane. The plasma membrane consists of a bilayer of phospholipids with embedded proteins. The major function of these proteins is to regulate the transport of material in and out of the cell. The movement of the particles is in both directions, which is controlled by the semi-permeable characteristic of the plasma membrane.
