To review:
The given blank space in the statement, “membranes consist of a bilayer of ________. The five major categories of protein within the bilayer are ________, ________, ________, _________, and ________ proteins.”
Introduction:
The cell membrane has a basic structure that performs crucial functions. The cell membrane that has a phospholipid bilayer, is responsible for maintaining the membrane fluidity and thereby the structure of membrane. Membranes consist of a bilayer of lipids and protein. The protein layer lies in between the two lipid layers.
Explanation of Solution
The phospholipid bilayer has many different proteins embedded in it. These proteins can be broadly categorized into five different groups.
Enzymes are proteins present in nature that enhance a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy of the reaction. Activation energy refers to the least amount of energy needed for conversion of substrate to product.
Receptor proteins are a type of glycoproteins which span the plasma membrane and have a specific binding site for a messenger molecule like a hormone or a neurotransmitter. On binding to an appropriate molecule, the receptor proteins are activated.
Recognition proteins are an important group of glycoproteins that help in the identification of self-proteins and thereby avoid autoimmune diseases.
Transport proteins span the phospholipid bilayer and aid in regulating the movement of hydrophilic molecules across the membrane.
Lastly, connection proteins help in maintaining the shape of the cell by providing connections between the plasma membrane and the cell’s cytoskeleton.
Membranes consist of a bilayer of lipids and proteins. The five major categories of protein within the bilayer are enzymes, receptor proteins, recognition proteins, transport proteins, and connection proteins.
