Chapter 49, Problem 4Q
Summary Introduction
To review:
The limitations of keeping the animals in captivity with an adequate amount of food for an experiment to study the adaptive advantage of the pulmonary bypass shunt.
Introduction:
An experiment was carried out in order to study the adaptive advantage of the pulmonary bypass shunt or the aortic shunt in alligators. The shunt was surgically removed in a group of alligators, while another group of alligators in which a similar sham surgery was performed was used as the control. Both the groups were further divided into two groups. One of these led a sedentary life and the other was exercised three times a week. All the animals were given enough food throughout the study.

In an effort to link cold environments with hypertension in humans, a preliminary experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of cold on hypertension in rats. Two random samples of 6 rats each were exposed to different environments. One sample of rats was held in a normal environment at 26°C. The other sample was held in a cold 5°C environment. Blood pressures and heart rates were measured for rats for both groups. The blood pressures for the 12 rats are shown in the table below.
Provide a 95% confidence interval on the difference in the two population means.
Do the data provide sufficient evidence that rats exposed to a 5°C environment have a higher mean blood pressure than rats exposed to a 26°C environment? Use α = 0.05.
What would be the control variables if any and the controls use in this experiment?
Continuing with the side-blotched lizard study... What would be an appropriate control group to use in this study?
Question 3 options:
female lizards that are kept at different temperatures
female lizards that are exposed to another female instead of a male
yellow-throated male lizards
male lizards with multicolored throats
blue-throated male lizards
