The functional residual volume (FRV) of an individual who is breathing from a flowmeter carrying 30 liters of air.
Given:
In the flowmeter carrying 30 liters of air with an initial gas mixture of 20% oxygen, 75% nitrogen, 5% helium, an individual was asked to breathe. The individual was able to inhale and exhale 20 times and the final concentration of helium was measured to be 4.6%.
Introduction:
The FRV of an individual’s lungs may be defined as that volume of air which is present after the person has exhaled in normal conditions. Even after the exhalation, there is some amount of air that is left in the lungs and that is FRV.
