In autumn plants undergo senescence under the influence of short days and decreasing temperature. Senescence is a “genetically programmed series of events” that includes the death of the parts of the plant. During senescence, chlorophyll and starch in the leaf are broken down into simpler molecules that are stored in roots and stem for winter.
