Concept explainers
To Contrast: Elastic potential energy and chemical potential energy.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The energy stored in a body due to its state, arrangement or position.
Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in an object due to its elasticity, i.e., the ability to compress or stretch.
For example, a stretched rubber band has potential energy due to the elastic forces between the particles that make the band. This energy is called elastic potential energy.
Chemical potential energy is stored energy that is due to
For example, gasoline in cars also has stored energy. This energy is due to the chemical bonds between atoms of gasoline. Hence, energy is chemical potential energy.
Conclusion: Elastic potential energy is the energy due to compression or stretching an object, whereas, chemical potential energy is the energy stored due to chemical bonds between atoms that make up the object.
