To determine:
The common in all the hydrocarbons given in hydrocarbon molecule set.
Introduction:
Hydrocarbons are the compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen atoms in their structure. Hydrogen atoms are attached to carbon atoms in many different configurations. There are three main groups of aliphatic hydrocarbons that are alkanes, alkenes and alkynes.
Aromatic hydrocarbons are also of two types that are arenes which contain a benzene ring and the other type is nonbenzenoid aromatic hydrocarbons which lack a benzene ring in their structure.

- Any one molecule can be represented many ways. For example, pentane can be represented as: C5H12CH3CH2CH2CH2CH3 Why do chemists use so many different ways to represent the same molecule? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?arrow_forwardWhat are the functional groups present in each compound?arrow_forwardIdentify the functional group each compound represents. Ifthe compound represents two or more functional groups, list all groups being represented. If the compound is a hydrocarbon, write the specific type of hydrocarbon class it belongs. Write your answer on the space provided below each item.arrow_forward
- 1. Can you name an organic compound using rules of nomenclature for inorganic compound? why or why not? 2. How does knowledge on nomenclature help engineering students and professional engineers in the field?arrow_forward>What are the main classifications of hydrocarbons? What are their generic molecular formulas?arrow_forwardWhat are functional groups? Why is it logical and useful to classify organic compounds according to their functional groups?arrow_forward
- Name one (1) example for each classification of hydrocarbons given below. Write the molecular formula and its corresponding chemical name. 1. alkane 2.alkene 3.alkyne 4. cyclic 5. aromatic 6. heterocyclicarrow_forwardName the following molecule: CI In addition to naming the above molecule, explain how the name was determined? In other words, explain how each component of the molecule's name was identified.arrow_forwardBecause organic compounds are associated with living organisms, their properties are governed by fundamentally different chemical principles from those of inorganic compounds.
