Concept explainers
To determine: The name of two groups of protists which are known to cause HABs in marine ecosystems.
Introduction: Protists are single-celled eukaryotic organisms consisting of protozoa, unicellular algae, and slime molds. Marine ecosystems such as salt marshes, intertidal zones, estuaries, lagoons, mangroves, and coral reefs consist of a rich source of nutrients and salt which is required for the growth of microorganisms.
To determine: The hazards posed by HABs for other marine organisms and humans.

- write an article on Cryptosporidium a pathogenic eukaryote parasite. What is the natural habitat for this organism? (water, soil, humans, plants, etc.) What clinical significance does this organism have for humans? (What disease/infections does it cause in humans?) What is the mode of transmission to humans? (How do you get an infection with this organism?) What is the worldwide geographic distribution for this organism? (Where is it found, where have there been reported cases or outbreaks lately?)arrow_forward* 0O 100 v Ao you would use to identify this species (what features would you use personally to ID). ^タヘ三 臣ヘ= 5. View the protists blood parasites (Trypanosoma cruzi, Trypanosoma brucei, and Plasmodium vivax). Which of these species is more likely to cause the most human issues (in terms of number of people with the disease)? What is one of the most likely ways to keep from being infected by any of these blood parasites? Explain. 6. What are slime molds? 7. Identify the organisms below. Next to each name you ID the organism as, give 2 features that helped you come to that determination. Name of organism: a. - Why have molecular biologists sequenced the genomes of severalparasitic protists?arrow_forwardConsidering both habitat conditions and requirements for successful symbiosis, why should you be surprised that squid and the rumen of a cow have the exact same microbial symbiots?arrow_forwardProtists are a group of eukaryotic organisms that are brought together by scientists mostly by convenience. I) What is the relationship between all protists that ties them together? ii) provide an example of a autotrophic and heterotrophic protists group, iii) what is the relationship between the multicellular eukaryotes and the protists?arrow_forward

Why Are photosynthetic protists so important to marine and aquatic ecosystems? what limits the growth of these organisms and what causes blooms> What will be affected of marine produces are disrupted?arrow_forwardWhat are the differences between direct and indirect life cycles? Give two (2) representative parasitic helminths species in aquaculture for each life cycle. Why is there a need to study the parasite life cycle?arrow_forwardRuminants (like cattle) are herbivores but lack the necessary enzymes to digest cellulose from plants. Part of the digestive tract of ruminants contains a microbial community that can break down cellulose. These microbes gain energy from the plant material, and byproducts of their metabolism provide the host with a source of Carbon and energy. What type of symbiosis does this relationship describe?arrow_forward
- Compare the mechanisms by which most eukaryotic cells acquire nutrients with those used by bacteria and archaea. What are the implications in terms of survival in different habitats and competition between eukaryotic microbes such as protists and bacteria and archaea?arrow_forwardWhat two microbes form a partnership in the lichen symbiosis? What are the benefits to both partners?arrow_forwardYou have discovered a new species aquatic protist that is a primary producer. It cannot swim on its own. It appears to be resistant to physical damage from wave action due to the presence of a glass-like wall. Which of the following organisms would this organism be most like?
