Chapter 3, Problem 98P
The ε4 allele of the gene encoding apolipoprotein E (APOE) is strongly associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but its value in making the diagnosis remains uncertain. A study was conducted among 2188 patients who were evaluated at autopsy for Alzheimer’s disease by previously established pathological criteria [16]. Patients were also evaluated clinically for the presence of Alzheimer’s disease. The data in Table 3.15 were presented.
Suppose the pathological diagnosis is considered the gold standard for Alzheimer’s disease.

Anemia (low healthy blood cells or hemoglobin) has an important role in exercise performance.
However, the direct link between rapid changes of hemoglobin and exercise performance is
still unknown. A study investigated 18 patients with a blood disorder (beta-thalassemia).
Participants in the study performed an exercise test before and the day after receiving a blood
transfusion. Data are given in the table.

In a study of 301 Hispanic women living in San Antonia, Texas, one variable of interest was the percentage of subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG). IFG refers to a metabolic stage intermediate between normal glucose homeostasis and diabetes. In the study, 24 women were classified in the IFG stage. The article cites population estimates for IFG among Hispanic women in Texas as 6.3%. Is there sufficient evidence to indicate the population of Hispanic women in San Antonio has a prevalence of IFG higher than 6.3%? Use 95% confidence level and the p -value method to form your conclusion.

A data set from a study that examined the effect of a specific diet on blood pressure is provided . Participants (n = 72) were randomly assigned either to a group that was put on the diet (Diet = Present) or to a group that was not put on the diet (Diet = Absent), and researchers wanted to know whether the diet had a significant impact on blood pressure.
Fully interpret the results in the context of this study (i.e., report the conclusions as related to the research question).

- A recent study set out to investigate the association between smoking and the development of coronary artery disease (CAD), the leading cause of heart attacks among adults in the US. Upon enrollment in the study, 1,232 adult participants were asked to report whether they had ever smoked more than one pack of cigarettes in the lifetimes. The participants were then examined for the development of CAD once a year for the following twenty years. Examinations found 106 cases of CAD among the 368 participants who had never smoked and 419 cases of CAD among the 864 participants who had ever smoked. 6) What type of study design was used? Explain. 7) Set up the 2X2 contingency table for the data. 8) For this type of study design, what is the appropriate measure to describe the strength of the association between the exposure and the disease? 9) Calculate the measure identified in question 8. 10) Interpret the measure calculated in question 9.arrow_forwardBenzene is a pollutant that, according to studies, can be associated with health problems. Benzene is found in air, water, and soil and comes from both industrial and natural sources. Benzene levels in indoor air are generally higher than outdoors. The main source of benzene in indoor air appears to be tobacco smoke, thus the combustion of tobacco is a major source of pollution. Benzene levels are measured in a random sample of 36 bars in a city, obtaining an average benzene level of 19.2 mg / m3, with a standard deviation of 2.1 mg / m3. Data on date of occurrence, age and sex of the child, and type of agent involved were recorded and analyzed by standard statistical methods. Poisoning was due to ingestion of aspirin in 35 per cent of the children studied and to the ingestion of hydrocarbon distillates in 18 per cent. A statistically significant male dominance was found for ingestion of hydrocarbons; age-specific peaks were found for some categories. Trends as to the relative and absolute frequencies of each specific poison from one year to the next were noted; possible reasons for increasing or decreasing trends are discussed. - Elissa Epel, a professor of health psychology at the University of California–San Francisco, studied women in high- and low-stress situations. She found that women with higher cortisol responses to stress ate significantly more sweet food and consumed more calories on the stress day compared with those with low cortisol responses, and compared with themselves on lower stress days. Increases in negative mood in response to the stressors were also significantly related to greater food consumption. These results suggest that psychophysiological responses to stress may influence subsequent eating behavior. Over time, these alterations could impact both weight and health. You are interested in studying whether students living in the dorms or students living off campus have higher cortisol levels. This may cause a reduction in energy, an increase in fat, and other undesirable changes. Do testosterone supplements reverse some of these effects? A study in the Netherlands assigned 237 men aged 60 to 80 with low or low-normal testosterone levels to either a testosterone supplement or a placebo. Why is it necessary to include a control group in this experiment? Every experiment needs a control group in order to make proper comparisons between treatments. A control group is necessary to balance the effects of other variables among the treatment groups. A control group is necessary so any differences in the effects of the treatments can be distinguished from chance differences between the groups. A control group helps avoid confounding and reduces variability in the response variable. A control group is used to provide a baseline for comparing the effects of other treatments.arrow_forwardSide effects of Avandia - Rosiglitazone is the active ingredient in the controversial type 2 diabetes medicine Avandia and has been linked to an increased risk of serious cardiovascular problems such as stroke, heart failure, and death.
