Consider a venturi with a small hole drilled in the side of the throat. This hole is connected via a tube to a closed reservoir. The purpose of the venturi is to create a vacuum in the reservoir when the venturi is placed in an airstream. (The vacuum is defined as the pressure difference below the outside ambient pressure.) The venturi has a throat-to-inlet area ratio of 0.85. Calculate the maximum vacuum obtainable in the reservoir when the venturi is placed in an airstream of 90 m/s at standard sea level conditions.

- STELIA Aerospace are planning to design a spherical cryogenic tank to be stored with liquid hydrogen. It is also designed with a system that if the tank reaches maximum capacity all entry and exit nozzles will automatically be closed. The specific gravity of this fluid is approximately seven hundredths the density of water. The tank is designed to have two-entry filtration system and an exit nozzle located at the bottom. The liquid hydrogen flows into the cryogenic tank at a rate of 0.85 kilograms per second and 0.75 kilograms per second. At the same time the exit nozzle is opened with a rate of 0.005 kilograms per second. (a)The shutoff valves were closed after 35 minutes, what is the volume and radius of the spherical tank? (b) Using your answers on item a, how full is the tank (in percentage) after 27.15 minutes?arrow_forwardA pump takes in oil at a temperature of 400oF from a closed tank in which the pressure is 85 psig. The specific gravity of oil 0.78 and its vapor pressure is 100 psia. The loss in the suction pipe is 2ft and the pump is located 12 ft below the oil level in a plant at sea level. Will there be cavitation in the pump? If so, how can this be corrected?arrow_forwardPressure at A=22kpaarrow_forward
- We are willing to design a simple setup for the lubrication of a rotating rod. To do so, the vertically aligned rotatingrod is approached to a horizontal surface that is covered with oil. The rod approaches the surface, so there is a 0.2 mmof liquid film between the rod and the fixed surface. Suppose that the radius of the rod is 15 mm, and the rod's angularvelocity is 1500 rpm. Determine the power consumption due to the friction.arrow_forwardWhat is the minimum duct size needed to move 200 cu ft per minute andmaintain duct velocity below 800 feet per minute?arrow_forwardA centrifugal pump is required to handle 50 lit/sec of gasoline against a net pressure of 4 kg/cm'. - Two vertical circular cylindrical tanks are connected near the bottom by a short tube having a cross-sectional area of 725 cm2. The inside diameters of the tanks are 3m and 1.5 m, respectively. The tanks contain oil. With the valve in the tube closed, the oil surfaces are 4m in the larger tank and 0.6 m in the smaller above the tube. With c=0.78, find the time (in seconds) required for the surfaces to equalize following a quick opening of the valve. - The diameter of a cylindrical water tank is Do and its height is H. The tank is filled with water, which is open to the atmosphere. An orifice of diameter D with a smooth entrance (i.e., negligible losses) is open at the bottom. Develop a relation for the time required for the tank (a) to empty halfway and (b) to empty completely.arrow_forwardThe minimum fresh air requirement of a residential building is specified to be 0.35 air change per hour (per ASHRAE standards). That is, 35% of the entire quantity of air contained in a residence should be replaced by fresh outdoor air every hour. The ventilation requirement of a 3-meter highresidence with 150 square meters of floor space is to be met by air provided by a single fan.a. Determine the required flow capacity of the fan (in m3/min).b. Find the diameter of the fan duct required (circular cross-section) if the average air velocity from the duct is to be 3 m/sec.arrow_forwardTwo vats are connected by a submerged pipe with a square cross-section, as shown in the image attached. A hinged valve in the centre of the square pipe prevents the fluid in both vats from mixing. The valve door is square and has a cross sectional area of L X L, and the hinge is at the top of the door. The fluid depth in the first tank is h1 and the depth in the second tank is h2. The fluid in Vat 1 exerts a horizontal force, F1, on the valve door when it is closed. Express F1 in terms of h1. The fluid in Vat 1 exerts a Moment M1 on the valve door (acting about the hinge at the top of the door) when it is closed. Express M1 in terms of h1. Considering the fluid in both vat1 and vat2, express the net moment on the door in terms of h1 and h2 when it is closed. If the valve can withstand a moment of Mmax before opening, find the maximum possible height difference between the fluid in vats 1 and 2.arrow_forward
