Concept explainers
(a)
To explain: How Q protein could enhance the expression of the bacteriophage genes.
Introduction: The activity of bacterial RNA polymerase (RNAP) is regulated by the cis-encoded template-specific signals and trans-acting transcription factors. The gene expression depends on the promoter recognition, rate of transcription elongation, and termination efficiency. The termination may require factors such as Rho. There are transcription antitermination mechanisms that allow transcription through terminators such as Q protein by E.coli bacteriophage.
(b)
To explain: The reason why the effect of Q depends on its ability to interact with the specific DNA sequences, and not just RNAP.
