Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason why rotaviral deaths are rarer in developed nations than in developing countries.

Concept introduction:

Rotaviruses are the reoviruses that are spherical in shape. They can be distinguished by the presence of spikes made up of glycoprotein on their capsids. These spikes help the viruses to attach to host cells, even in the absence of envelope. These viruses are known to cause infection through the oral-faecal route in almost every infant, causing gastrointestinal diseases. Such diseases are self-healing; therefore, the treatment involves replacement of fluids rather than drugs.

1) What type of epidemic is the blue line? 2) What type of epidemic is the pink (red) line? 3) Why does the red line go sharply up and down while the blue line is much more gradual?
An epidemiological study of 500 men between the ages of 20 and 65 years of age revealed a correlation between an increased consumption of tomatoes and a lower incidence of prostate cancer. The results of this study do not prove that increased tomato consumption lowers the risk for prostate cancer because: A) The study shows a correlation between two factors that may or may not actually have an effect on each other. B) The study does not show how tomatoes lower prostate cancer risk. C) A single study cannot provide enough evidence to conclusively prove an effect. D) All of the above are valid reasons.
