Chapter 24, Problem 6WIO
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason for beneficial adaptations of synapses and neurotransmitters to animal nervous systems, compared to direct connections between neurons.

Introduction:

A neuron conducts action potential to form a communication network and carry the nerve impulse to another cell. The electrical impulse cannot transmit directly from cell to cell because most neurons do not touch each other. An action potential reaches the tip of an axon and stimulates the release of a chemical called neurotransmitter.

An undisclosed drug (Drug A) is a drug that can block voltage-gated K+ channels when being introduced into the bloodstream. Explain the effects of Drug A on the action potentials produced by a neuron. If Drug A could be applied selectively to a presynaptic neuron that releases an excitatory neurotransmitter, analyse how would it alter the synaptic effect of the neurotransmitter on the presynaptic cell. The image attached below depicts a histological slice of human cerebral cortex tissue.Using knowledge of the central nervous system and various cell-cell interactions, identify thekey type(s) of cell junctions present in this image (for example, tight junctions, gap junctions, and adherens junctions/desmosomes). Briefly describe the function of these celljunctions. How would the function of the central nervous system be impaired if your above identified celljunctions were disrupted?
What adaptive advantage do synapses provide in nervoussystems (i.e., why isn’t the nervous system just a mesh of cellscytoplasmically connected through gap junctions)?
