Concept introduction:
The procedure in which an atom, molecule or ionspends one or more electrons is called oxidation and in the process in which itacquires one or more electrons is called reduction. The element which loses electrons is said to be oxidized and which obtains electrons is said to be reduced.
A constituent which oxidizes others but itself experiences reduction is known as an oxidizing agent or oxidant, and a substance which undergoes oxidation but reduces others is known as reducing agent.

Calculate magnetic moment for the [Fe(H2O)6]3+ and [Fe(CN)6]3−, which one show strong paramagnetic behavior- Explain?arrow_forward[CoF6]3- absorbs 700 nm (red) radiation whereas [Co(H2O)6]3+ absorbs 600 nm (orange) radiation. What are the colors (appearance) of the above complexes?arrow_forward
- Are [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl and [Co(NH3)4Cl]Cl2 isomers of each other? If so, what type of isomers are they?arrow_forwardThe self exchange electron-transfer reaction between [Co(en)3]3+ and [Co(en)3]2+ is rather slow. Explain this observation on the basis of d-orbital occupations.arrow_forwardOne and only one combination of cobalt salt and solvent should have turned blue, thusindicating the presence of [CoCl4]2− ion. Explain why only this combination underwent a reactionand the others did not.arrow_forward
- [Co(H2O)6]2+ (aq) + 4 Cl-(aq )⇆ [CoCl4]2-(aq) + 6 H2O 3. Does the value of the equilibrium constant (K) for this reaction increase, decrease, or remain the same as the concentration of chloride increases? Explain your answer incorporating the definition of an equilibrium constant.arrow_forwardExplain how the diphosphate ion, [O3P−O−PO3]4−, can function as a water softener that prevents the precipitation of Fe2+ as an insoluble iron salt.arrow_forward[CoF6]3- absorbs 700 nm (red) radiation whereas [Co(H2O)6]3+ absorbs 600 nm (orange) radiation.
