Concept explainers
To write:
How a palynologist will help determine the origin of corn.
Introduction:
The study of plant pollen, spores and certain microscopic plankton organisms in both living and fossil form is known as Palynology. In studying spores and pollens of preserved species samples, palynologists can reveal many details about the agricultural history or ecosystem of a region.
Explanation of Solution
Corn was first believed to be domesticated form a plant known as teosinte. It is now cultivated throughout the world. Scientists can identify the family or genus of a pollen grain by the distinctive outer layer of its cell wall known as exine. This characteristics is an important tool for palynologists. Pollen fossils can help to trace the agricultural history of an area. Thus to find the origin of corn, the scientists can examine the pollen structure of corn and teosinte . Similarities in the pollen structures can give clues on the origin of corn.
Thus to find the origin of corn, the scientists can examine the pollen structure of corn and teosinte .
