Concept Introduction:
Isomers are compounds having same molecular formula but differ in bonding between the atoms present in it. Structural isomerism, stereoisomerism, geometrical isomerism are few types of isomerism. Isomers have entirely different physical and chemical property even though they have same molecular formula.
Structural isomers are the one which have same molecular formula but differ in arrangement and bonding.
To Draw: The structural formulas for an alkane, an alkene, a cycloalkane and an aromatic hydrocarbon containing eight carbon atoms.

- Complete and balance the following combustion reactions. Assume that each hydrocarbon is converted completely to carbon dioxide and water. (a) Propane + O2 (b) Octane + O2 (c) Cyclohexane + O2 (d) 2-Methylpentane + O2arrow_forwardHow does the structure of a cycloalkane differ from that of a straight-chain or branched-chain alkane?arrow_forwardAn impure sample of hydrocarbon having a total mass of 50.8g undergoes combustion analysis to generate 72.6g CO2 (g) and 14.8g H2O (g). Assuming that the impurities do not contain carbon or hydrogen what percentage of the initial sample is the pure hydrocarbon?arrow_forward
- (a) When the metallic element sodium combines with the nonmetallic element bromine, Br2(l), how can you determine the chemical formula of the product? How do you know whether the product is a solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature? Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction. (b) When a hydrocarbon burns in air, what reactant besides the hydrocarbon is involved in the reaction? What products are formed? Write a balanced chemical equation for the combustion of benzene C6H6(l), in air.arrow_forward(a) What is the difference between chlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons?arrow_forwardAlkanes are hydrocarbons containing only single bonds. Acyclic alkanes have carbon atoms arranged in chains, whereas cycloalkanes have carbon atoms arranged in one or more rings. How many hydrogen atoms are in an acyclic alkane with 6 carbon atoms?arrow_forward
- Identify two differences between straight chain alkanes, alkenes, and cyclic alkanes. Predict how these differences affect their physical and chemical properties.arrow_forwardDiscuss the Properties of Alkanes ?arrow_forwardAlcohols A, B, and C all have the composition C4H10O. Molecules of alcohol A contain a branched carbon chain and can be oxidized to an aldehyde; molecules of alcohol B contain a linear carbon chain and can be oxidizedto a ketone; and molecules of alcohol C can be oxidized to neither an aldehyde nor a ketone. Write the Lewis structures of these molecules.arrow_forward
