Chapter 22.3, Problem 6LO
Summary Introduction
To distinguish: The members of genus Homo that include H.habilis, H. ergaster, H.erectus, H.antecessor, H.heidebergensis, H.neanderthalensis, and H.sapiens.
Introduction: The genus Homo includes fossil ancestral humans and modern day humans. They exhibited the common characteristic of bipedalism, terrestrial mode of living, and civilization. Homo genus is, collectively, the most advanced placental mammals that are dry-nosed primates. Homo genus includes several extinct species. The only surviving species is Homo sapiens. Homo species’ fossils were discovered in several parts of the world based on which the human migration pattern was studied.

- Working as an Anthropologist in South Africa, you’ve been given four hominin craniums and are asked to develop a new classification system. Using cranium size, the robustness of the cheek bones and brow ridges, and the prognathism of the face, how would you categorize these four skulls into species? Would you categorize all four of them as belonging to the same genus? Two geneses? Three geneses? Four geneses? Do you believe any of them are the same species?
