Introduction:

The ductus arteriosus is present in the fetus and it minimizes the entry of the blood in the non-functional lungs of the fetus during fetal life. The blood from the right ventricle bypasses to the left auricle in the fetus because of the ductus arteriosus. It generally gets closed up by the 6th month of post fetal life. In case it does not get closed, it must be closed surgically.
