Introduction:
The image given belowshows the results of a more recent 21-cm survey of the entire sky. Here, neutral hydrogen gas (H I) in the plane of the Milky Way stands out prominently as a bright band across the middle of this image.
The Earth is part of the Milky Way galaxy. Earth is not at the centerof the galaxy but lies at one end in the minor Orion arm. Most of stars in the galaxy lie in the disk around its center. When observed from the Earth, this disk having billion of stars can be seen in the form of the bright band extending around the sky.
