In the presence of either acid or base, the two molecules of aldehydes or ketone that present alpha hydrogen are react and forms β-hydroxy carbonyl compounds, this reaction is known as aldol addition reaction.

The dehydration of aldol addition product results in the formation of α,β- unsaturated ketone or aldehyde. Such a reaction is known as aldol condensation reaction.
