Concept introduction:

The hydrolysis of esters results in the breaking of the ester bond that ultimately forms the respective carboxylic acids and alcohol molecules.

This hydrolysis is taken place either in acidic medium or in basic medium. If the hydrolysis is acid catalyzed then the proton attacks on the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group and if it is basic medium then the hydroxyl ion attacks at the carbon atom of the carbonyl group present in the given ester molecule.
