Currents in the heart. The body contains many small currents caused by the motion of ions in the organs and cells. Measurements of the magnetic field around the chest due to currents in the heart give values of about 1.0 μG. Although the actual currents are rather complicated, we can gain a rough understanding of their magnitude if we model them as a long, straight wire. If the surface of the chest is 5.0 cm from this current, how large is the current in the heart?

Because the magnet is switched on and off quickly, it can induce large eddy currents in metal objects. Suppose a patient is wearing a metal ring with a radius of 1.4 cm and a mass of 110 g. Such a ring has a resistance of about 0.016 N. If the magnet in the MRI rises from 0T to its maximum strength of 1.5 Tin 1.94 ms, what is the maximum current that could be induced in the ring?arrow_forward

- Neuron can create magnetic fields in the brain when action potentials generate current through their axons. A typical axon can carry a current of 0.040 microAmps. Assume that we can model the brain and these currents as wires with surrounding vacuum.arrow_forwardWe have seen that the heart produces a magnetic field that can be used to diagnose problems with the heart. The magnetic field of the heart is a dipole field produced by a loop current in the outer layers of the heart.
