Interpreting Data. As shown in Figure 2.17, radiometric dating can be used to determine the age of biological materials. Carbon-14 makes up about 1part per trillion of naturally occurring carbon. When an organism dies, its body contains 1 carbon-14 atom per trillion total carbon atoms. After 5,700 years (the half-life of carbon-14), its body contains one-half as much carbon-14; the other half has decayed and is no longer present. French scientists determined that prehistoric cave paintings were made using natural dyes about 13,000 years ago. How much carbon-14 must the scientists have found in the cave paintings to support this result? Express your answer in both percentage of carbon-14 remaining and in parts of carbon-14 per trillion.

- PART A. Redraw the table below on the whiteboard. Use your Biological Molecules Part 2 handout to fill in the missing information in Column B and C. A) Polymer Lipid DNA B) Monomer (or component units in the case of lipids). Draw the specific structure and put the name of the molecule under the structure. Fatty acids (pick 1), glycerol, glycerophospholipid Deoxynucleotide monophosphates (Pick one purine and one pyrimidine) C) Additional tasks Is your fatty acid saturated or unsaturated? How do you know? On your glycerophospholipid, identify the glycerol group, the fatty acids, and the phosphocholine. Label the hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail. Label which is the purine and which is the pyrimidine. Circle the sugar on each.arrow_forwardExponential Decay A. Dehydration Biological Half-Life: "The time required for half the quantity of a drug or other substance deposited in a living organism to be metabolized or eliminated by normal biological processes." The biological half-life of water in a human is 7 to 14 days. This means that it takes one to two weeks to lose half of the water in your body. Why such a broad range? Because the half-life of water can be dramatically altered by a person's environment and behaviour. What are some factors that would affect your rate of dehydration?arrow_forwardBiochemist..arrow_forward
- Biologically, how expensive are you? The elements that make up the typical adult body can be purchased from chemical supply companies for about $3,000-$4,000. However, each of those elements must be chemically bonded to together to produce the complex biological molecules of life (proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids). Using sophisticated laboratory equipment, highly trained scientists can synthesize these complex biological molecules from basic elemental building blocks, but this costs millions of dollars!Consider the differences in worth between the elemental and biomolecular components of life. Explain the difference in terms of the characteristics of life.arrow_forwardCALCULATOR COLOR THEME Q Q ZOOM 3. The 1952 Miller-Urey experiment involved heating water, methane, ammonia, and hydrogen in sealed, interconnected glass vials. The purpose of this experiment was to simulate the conditions and substances on early Earth before life. Heating these simple substances led to the formation of 23 simple amino acids in one week. Amino acids can be linked together into long, complex molecules that cells need to carry out the basic life functions. What can be determined by analyzing the data produced by the Miller-Urey experiment?arrow_forwardHelping tags: ATP accounting, biology, chemistry, biochemistryarrow_forward
