Introduction:

Pitch Lake is the world’s largest asphalt lake with extremely high temperature, poisonous hydrocarbons and oily tar. The conditions at this lake are too hostile for life. However, the microorganisms found in tiny water droplets trapped in oil survive by degrading the oil and producing methane.
