Chapter 19, Problem 3STP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Quantity of 99Tc left after 1 day from a sample of 200g must be determined.

Concept introduction: In a nuclear reaction, unstable nuclide disintegrates into stable nuclide with emission of various radiations spontaneously. It is called radioactivity of nucleus. Emission of rays like alpha, beta and gamma rays occur in the process which changes the identity of nucleus.

During a nuclear change, an element undergoes change in its atomic mass or atomic number or both by emission of charged particles such as beta particle, alpha particle. Beta particle is one that has unit negative charge and alpha particle is one that has 2 unit positive charges and is equivalent to helium atom 24He . Emission of proton, beta particle, alpha particle causes a change in atomic number of element.

Answer to Problem 3STP

Quantity of 99Tc left after 1 day from a sample of 200g is 12.5g . Correct option is D.

Explanation of Solution

Given information: Elapsed time is 1 days that is 24hr , mass of 99Tc sample is 200g and half life is 6hr .

The formula to calculate the number of half lives ( n) is as follows:

  n=tT

Where,

  n is number of half lives.

  t is the elapsed time.

  T is the half life of radioactive nucleus.

Substitute 24hr for t , 6hr for T in above equation.

  n=tT=24hr6hr=4

Number of half lives equal to 4 .

The formula to calculate the remaining amount of radioactive element is as follows:

  N=N0(12)n

Where,

  n is number of half lives.

  N0 is the initial amount of radioactive element.

  N is the remaining amount of radioactive element.

Substitute 4 for n , 200g for N0 in above equation.

  N=N0(12)n=(200g)(12)4=12.5g

Quantity of 99Tc left after 1 day from a sample of 200g is 12.5g .

Conclusion

Since the quantity of 99Tc left after 1 day from a sample of 200g is 12.5g . Therefore option A,B and C are incorrect.
