Question
Chapter 19, Problem 3PDT
Summary Introduction
To suggest: Some hypothesis for the apparent conflict between insect diversification and co-evolution of vascular plants.
Introduction: Competitive displacement is the process in which increasing diversity of species one clade causes a decline in the corresponding clade of species. Incumbent replacement is characterized by the extinction of one clade of species which enables the corresponding clade of species in the process of diversification later in their life. The evidence given by Labandeira and Sepkoski with respect to insect diversification and evolution of vascular plants did not favor the hypothesis given by Ehrlich and Raven.

Next to the species names are the tooth morphology of each species. For example, species A has prominent molar teeth, thus likely a herbivore. On the other hand, species C has prominent canine teeth, thus likely a carnivore. Which of the following statements is correct? The most recent common ancestor for species A to H is probably a carnivore. The most recent common ancestor for species A to H is probably a herbivore. It is impossible to tell what the main food source is for the most recent common ancestor of species A to H. For species C, D, E, F, G, there are four evolutionary events that lead to the evolution of canine tooth morphology. IF the common ancestor of species C, D, E, F, G is a carnivore, then the molar teeth for species D is a plesiomorphy.arrow_forward

E) Lizards and snakes are more recently diverged from each other than they are from crocodiles.arrow_forwardWhich of the following passages inaccurately describes the evolutionary process? Wings are a highly valuable structure for any species as they increase survivorship and dispersal capabilities. Insect wings are hypothesized to have evolved from dorsal extensions from their thorax that, over generations, were selected for as they helped to absorb solar energy, aiding in thermoregulation. AS mutations continued to accrue, muscles attached to those flaps, making them more motile, and uitimately setting the foundation for wingS. Mammals have three ossicles, or tiny bones, in their middle ear that aid the hearing: the malleus, the incus, and the stapes. The stapes is the oldest of the three bones, having evolved from the pharyngeal arch ll, called the hyoid arch. We know it's the oldest as it is found in tetrapods (the columella) and in some more recently evolved fish. The malleus and incus evolved from bones of their ancestral mammal-like reptiles jaws, the articular and the quadrate…arrow_forward
