Roan Paper Co. produces the paper used by wallpaper manufacturers. Roan’s four-stage process includes mixing, cooking, rolling, and cutting. On March 1, the Mixing Department had 300 rolls of paper in process. During March, the Mixing Department completed the mixing process for those 300 rolls and also started and completed the mixing process for an additional 4,200 rolls of paper. The department started but did not finish the mixing process for an additional 500 rolls, which were 20% complete with respect to both direct materials and conversion work at the end of March. Direct materials and conversion costs are incurred evenly throughout the mixing process. The Mixing Department compiled the following data for March:
Requirements
- 1. Prepare a production cost report for the Mixing Department for March. The company uses the weighted-average method.
- 2. Journalize all transactions affecting the company’s mixing process during March. Assume labor costs are accrued and not yet paid.

- Rich company produces a variety of stationery products. One product, sealing wax sticks, passes through two processes: blending and molding. The weighted average method is used to account for the cost of production. Two ingredients, paraffin and pigment are added at the beginning of the process and heated and mixed for several hours. After blending, the resulting product is sent to the Molding department, where it is poured into molds and cooled. The following information relates to the blending process for November: a) Work in process, November 1, had 20,000 pounds, 20% complete with respect to conversion costs. Costs associated with partially completed units with: Paraffin : $ 120,000 Pigment : $ 100,000 Direct Labour : $ 30,000 Overhead applied : $ 10,000 b) Work in process, August 31, had 30,000 pounds, 70% complete with respect to conversion costs. c) Units completed and transferred out totalled 500,000 pounds. - Great Southern Furniture Company (GSFC) produces dining tables in a three-stage process: cutting, assembly and staining. Direct materials (lumber) are added at the beginning of the cutting process, and conversion costs are incurred evenly throughout the process. The Cutting Department of GSFC began June with no work-in-process inventory. During the month work was started on 13,000 metres of lumber. Activity in the Cutting Department included cutting 10,000 metres of lumber, which were transferred to the Assembly Department. Process inspection occurs at the end of the process and normally no losses are expected at this stage. However during the month 1,000 meters of lumber were rejected at inspection and sold as scrap at $75 per meter. The ending work-in-process inventory at June 30 was 70% of the way through the cutting process. - Brun Company produces its product through two processing departments: Mixing and Baking. Direct materials are added at the beginning of the mixing process. Conversion costs are added evenly. The company uses monthly reporting periods for its weighted-average process costing. The Work in Process Inventory—Mixing account had a balance of $21,300 on November 1, which consisted of $6,800 of direct materials and $14,500 of conversion costs. During the month, the Mixing department incurred the following costs. Direct materials $116,400 Conversion . $1,067,000 At the beginning of the month, 7,500 units were in process in the Mixing department. During November, the Mixing department started 104,500 units and transferred 100,000 units of its product to Baking. At the end of the month, the Mixing department’s work in process inventory consisted of 12,000 units that were 100% complete with respect to direct materials and 25% complete with respect to conversion.
