Why don’t oil and water mix?
The reason that oil and water do not mix.
Answer to Problem 13TE
The oil is non-polar and water is polar they don’t have any tendency to mix with each other.
Explanation of Solution
Oil gets formed as a long chain containing carbon atoms and thus has a non-polar nature while water is made up of two hydrogen-oxygen bonds which are dipoles and thus have a polar nature.
The molecules possess tendency to mix with the component of the same type, that means polar molecule can easily get mixed with another polar molecule and a non-polar molecule can mix with another non-polar molecule.
Since oil and water both have different nature and thus does not show any tendency to get mixed with each other.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the oil is non-polar and water is polar they don’t have any tendency to mix with each other.
