Answer to Problem 1RAT

The correct option for the statement “An atom loses an electron to another atom. Is this an example of a physical or chemical change?” is option (a).

Explanation of Solution

The matter is basically made of atoms. In the transformation of matter from one to another, two types of changes are involved that are physical change and chemical change. The chemical changes occur at molecular level and the electrons are involved too.

An atom is basically neutral and contains zero net charge. When there exists a net charge on any atom, it is considered as an ion.

When any atom releases an electron, a positive charge appears on it and is considered as positive ion. The formation of ions causes the formation of bonds. So, a new compound gets formed.

Thus, it is a chemical change involving the formation of ions.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the correct option for the statement “An atom loses an electron to another atom. Is this an example of a physical or chemical change?” is option (a).
