Interpretation:
The solubility product constant
Concept introduction:
At a given temperature, the product ofmolar concentrations of the ions of a salt present in the solution is known as the solubility product of the salt. It is represented by
Higher is the value of solubility product of a salt, higher is its solubility.
The presence of common ions in the solution decreases the solubility of a given compound.
For a general reaction:
The solubility product can be calculated by the expression as:

- To a beaker with 500 mL of water are added 95 mg of Ba(NO3)2, 95 mg of Ca(NO3)2, and 100.0 mg of Na2CO3. After equilibrium is established, will there be • no precipitate? • a precipitate of BaCO3 only? • a precipitate of CaCO3 only? • a precipitate of both CaCO3 and BaCO3? Assume that the volume of the solution is still 500.0 mL after the addition of the salts.arrow_forwardConsider the reaction BaF2(s)+SO42(aq)BaSO4(s)+2 F(aq) (a) Calculate K for the reaction.
