Simon was injured in a football game. In the emergency room, the emergency room physician pricked his skin, beginning at his feet, to see if there was a spinal cord injury and if so, what area was the most likely to be injured. Why did the physician prick his skin with a needle to determine the possibility of spinal cord injury?  Please respond with 1-2 paragraphs.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. Diagnosis involves making a “spinal tap” (lumbar puncture) and analyzing a sample of cerebrospinal fluid for signs of infection. Why analyze this fluid and not blood?
A patient has been experiencing numbness and pain in their hands and feet during the winter. They were initially diagnosed with Reynauds (which is caused by an overactive sympathetic nervous system cutting off blood flow to the hands in the cold), but recently they have been experiencing issues with fine motor control in their hands, and the doctor is concerned that it could be Multiple Sclerosis. How could you test to see which condition is causing this? Discuss that how will you treat this patient, if they have MS?
