Interpretation:

The formal charge on each nitrogen in the Lewis formula of azide ion and the net charge on the species is to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

The formal charge can be defined as the difference between the number of valence electrons present in the neutral atom and the total electron count in the Lewis formula.

To determine the electron count of an atom in a Lewis formula, we add the total number of electrons in unshared pairs to one-half the number of electrons in bonded pairs.
