Concept explainers
Interpretation:
In the two compounds given, the direction of the dipole moment is to be specified and the reasoning is to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Combining the concept of molecular geometry and polarity of bonds helps us to understand the concept of dipole moment.
The polarity of a bond is decided by the electronegativity of the atoms forming in the bond.
The atom which is more electronegative than the other will become the negative end, and the less electronegative atom becomes the positive end.
The molecular geometry is determined by the VSEPR model, which uses the idea that pair of an electron, bonded or an unshared, associated with a particular atom will be as far away as possible from the atom’s other pairs of electron.

Because each curved arrow shows the movement of two electrons, following the curved arrows illustrates what bonds are broken and formed in a reaction. Consider the following three-step process. (a) Add curved arrows in Step [1] to show the movement of electrons. (b) Use the curved arrows drawn in Step [2] to identify the structure of X. X is converted in Step [3] to phenol and HCI.
